ALWAYS A RAIDER AWARDS 2022-2023
Five Shaker Heights Red Raiders are this year's recipients of the annual Always a Raider Award. This is a very special award in Shaker because it recognizes first year Varsity players and other Seniors who played their entire youth hockey career in Shaker Heights. We have a wonderful community with a long legacy of great hockey players and families.
Thanks to the players, families and youth hockey coaches for making hockey a special part of the Shaker Community!
Andy Benincasa started his Shaker Heights hockey career alongside his sister, Susie, in the Shaker Heights mighty mite program. Bob Shenk did the best he could with these young upstarts. Many additional great coaches along the way influenced Andy to continue to progress and develop an earnest love for the sport. Thank you to Coach Rice and Coach Mayhugh. A very special thanks to Mike Berg who developed Andy during his Pee Wee and Bantam years. We are so grateful. The Benincasa family cannot thank the greater Shaker Heights Hockey program enough. We have been so lucky to know so many wonderful families and kids along the way. It’s been quite a ride.
Ryan Kilts grew up in hockey rinks watching his older brother play for Shaker Youth Hockey and the high school, but never had an interest in playing...until March 2017, when his dad took him and his brother to a Columbus Blue Jackets game. Something clicked for Ryan during that game, and shortly after he told his dad he wanted to play hockey. Ryan was 10 years old at the time, and had never been on skates. In addition to having zero experience on the ice, Ryan was also very small for his age. His dad was concerned he might get injured playing Squirt with kids twice his size, who also had several more years of hockey experience. So, he talked with Coach Berg about it and asked if Ryan could start in Mites. Coach had to think about it for a bit but did give Ryan an exception to play Mites his first season. From there Ryan developed a strong passion for hockey, which was evident in the effort he has put into improving his skills, and his progress each season since.
Freshman Connor Mayhugh started skating at Thornton when he was 3, and he started his hockey career soon afterwards. He has had many mentors and role models including Michael Berg, Craig Richards and his Father, Ryan Mayhugh. Connor is very grateful for what Shaker has taught him throughout his youth hockey years, and he would like to thank his parents, teammates and especially his coaches for supporting him on his hockey journey so far.
Sophomore Braden White started his hockey journey in his preschool years as a Raider Mighty Mite. All of his great coaches, including Lincoln Cloverdale, Jon Rice, and Michael Berg, taught him skills and improved his play as he made his way through the Shaker Youth Hockey program. Without Shaker Youth Hockey, Braden would not have improved as a player, made lasting memories, and most importantly, gained a love for the game throughout his childhood. He would like to thank his family, and all of his coaches & teammates, for contributing to his positive Shaker Youth Hockey experience, all while supporting him throughout.
Jacob Zeng started playing hockey at the age of 5 at Shaker Youth Hockey. He’s been very lucky to develop great friendships with his teammates and have many great coaches, including Richard Mears, Branden Henning, Mark Henning and Michael Berg. Throughout the years of hockey, he not only develops physical skills but also learns the values of respect, cooperation, trust, and responsibility. Jacob is very proud to be a member of our Shaker Raider. He truly appreciates the help and support from his coaches, family and teammates throughout the years.
